Ultimate DIY Facial
It’s self-love month here at Salt House, and we’re kicking things off with a luxurious self-care beauty routine that you can DIY using all-natural and organic ingredients! In this video, I share a complete 4-step at-home facial including a simple sugar scrub, a soothing floral steam, an antioxidant-rich ‘mermaid mask’ (my personal favorite!) made with spirulina, Greek yogurt, and Manuka honey, and a nourishing DIY face oil to finish it off. An amazing thing to do for yourself when you need some me-time, it would also be a nice treat for Valentine’s Day – either for yourself or with a couple of girlfriends. Enjoy!
First, you want to cleanse your skin and exfoliate. Making a scrub is so easy! You just take some sugar and add enough oil until it forms a paste (you can use coconut, olive oil, or grapeseed oil). I like to add fresh, organic lemon juice to this, as it contains natural AHA’s to remove dead skin cells.
Mix ingredients until they form a paste of desired consistency. You can add more sugar to make it more dry, or more oil to make the paste more liquid. Start with clean, make-up free skin before applying scrub.
Next, I like to do a facial steam to open and cleanse my pores. You can steam with plain water, but I like to add some essential oils and dried flowers to the water to make it extra-enriching and relaxing.
Add flowers to a large bowl. Pour boiling water over the bowl; add a few drops of essential oil. Place your face over the bowl and place a towel over your head to contain the steam. Sit for 10 minutes or as long as you like.
This mask is made of just three potent superfood ingredients that are all amazing for your skin: Manuka honey, Greek yogurt, and spirulina. The honey is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory; it’s a magic ingredient that’s known to be very healing. Many people also apply this by itself to the skin. Greek yogurt is also very healthy for your skin; the lactic acid dissolves dead skin and tightens pores, while the probiotics fight inflammation. And lastly, this is where the ‘mermaid’ comes in: the spirulina! Another superfood ingredient, spirulina is made from algae from the sea, and it’s incredibly high in antioxidants and chlorophyll.
Mix ingredients and apply to face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, or as long as you like.
After I take off my mask, I like applying a luxurious face oil. You guys have probably seen that face serums and oil are very popular now, but they can be quite expensive…so it’s a great thing to DIY – and again, we have complete control over the ingredients. I have oily skin and do breakout, so just know that using the right oils on your face will NOT make you break out. Actually, stripping your skin of too much oil is what will irritate your skin and cause breakouts. To make the oil, I use Jojoba oil as the base as it is the closest to the oil your skin naturally produces. Sweet almond oil also works well, as well as coconut oil or olive oil. Then I add a bit of another oil for more nourishment; here I’m using Tamanu oil, which is great for acne and scarring. Then, I like to add a couple drops of essential oil to it. I like rose and frankincense (which is also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, and great for breakouts and scarring), but you can use any oil you like. You may want to do some research to determine which essential oils are best for your skin type.
Fill bottle about 2/3 of the way full with your carrier base oil (jojoba oil). Add the additional nourishing oil (Tamanu oil) to the bottle until almost full. Add 7 to 8 drops essential oils of your choice.
